What to say?

I’m really struggling coming up with blog material now that a certain team from the windy city that starts with C and ends with hicago Bears is done on such a sour note.  Please add any suggestions for topics you’d like to see me write about.

I did watch Serenity the other night.  It was a movie based on the FOX TV show, “Firefly” that didn’t even make it one full season.  The show had such a strong cult following that they made it into a full-blown movie.  I work with three of these loyal fans and listen to them rave about the show.  Frankly, after seeing the movie, I can understand why it was cancelled, but I bet it could find a home on the Sci-Fi Channel.  The movie wasn’t all that bad, but having not seen any of the TV show episodes, I didn’t really feel much of a connection to the characters.  A couple characters die at the end, and I thought to myself, “Was I supposed to somehow care?”  I think to fully appreciate this movie, you need to be a fan of the series and know the characters better.

I’ve seen a lot of movies that are worse, but I really can’t see myself ever watching this movie a second time.  Even if I’m channel surfing and find it on Sci-Fi or USA, I probably won’t stop to watch it.  One a scale of one to ten, ten being the best, I give Serenity a 5.  However, I have to admit the movie was better than what it looked like in the trailers.  Based on the trailers, I would have given the movie a 2.

In other news, William Shatner sold his kidney stone for $25,000 and gave the proceeds to charity.  Wow, I don’t know what to say.

Have you ever read any of the questions in “Ask Yahoo?”  There is a good one today on how the planet, Uranus was named.  He he.

That's "starts with a 'C', ends with an 'O', and has a 'hicag' in the middle."

I never saw Firefly, and I thought Serenity rocked, as you know. Every sci-fi, western, and action cliche get used, reused, turned around, and skewered straight through. You've got your rag-tag fugitive fleet fleeing from the oppressive government. You've got car chases, space battles, gunfights, fistfights, and swordfights. There are drawn-out suspenseful moments ending in the cheap surprise, pulse-pounding action moments set against a fire-filled sky, moments of relief shattered by a spear through the heart. You've got a philosophical assassin who takes the time to lecture his prey on his motives and mores -- until his world gets all turned upside down. You've got a world-weary war veteran who thinks he's grown hard to everyone's needs but his own -- until he finds a cause to care about again. And you've got Buffy, the Space Cannibal Slayer.

Yeah! Space cannibals!

Hey, what is it about telepaths that makes them trainable to be ultimate fighting machines? Who cares! How do they know that Miranda is the only secret River knows about? Maybe that's the sequel! Why do the characters only sometimes have southern accents? Stop asking questions! It's entertainment, baby!

And, by the way, did you care when Padme died? Because I thought it was funny...

Padme dying was totally overshadowed by the whole Vader transformation, so it's easy for me to just focus on the good stuff. Yes, Padme's death, or especially the reason she died was pretty cheesy, but you have the whole character background thing going which helps to make you feel a little more emotionally attached.

Kahn,
You always seemed to get good readership and response when discussing TV shows.

You should comment on American Idol or Beauty and the Geek. Both shows are my guilty pleasure.

I recently got a DVR (TiVo for Comcast). So now I cn watch all my favorite shows whenever I want.
I just watched last weeks Family Guy.
That's still the funniest show on TV. I haven't gotten into American Dad, but I've heard that's also a hoot.

Other topics for blogging:
- Bad drivers
- classic TV shows... and the movies made from them
- Old-school video games making a comeback
- Any top 10 lists (music, movies, fast food, etc.)
- Any bad/dirty jokes
- Random observations
- Pet peeves/guilty pleasures
- Current events, especially those of the bizzare or obnoxious variety

Topics to avoid for blogging:
- Recaps on your weekends if you did nothing
- Articles/comments about shat machines and bugs
- Writing that you have nothing to write about

I think you have a good blog and you have lots of regular readers. You're obligated to keep things updated and interesting. Especially since Holly listed your blog in your Christmas letter.

I never saw "Firefly", but I really liked "Serenity" too for the reasons Dan states, and the fact that the movie had fun with all the cliches. The fact that it didn't take itself too seriously and that it had some good humor really added to it.
I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I thought Padme's death was lame, and I laughed at the Vader "NOOOOOOO!" scene.

As for your blog, here's my advice: tax accounting and macroeconomics. (and more references to my blog) Or, you could just post that picture of you in the Green Bay cheesehead getup.

Brian, I don't know if you're aware or not, but your picture is not centered. You might want to fix that.
