I'm here, just busy

We’ve been back in town since Wednesday, but I have until January 3 before I have to go back to work.  That hasn’t kept us from doing a bunch of projects around the house though.  We’ll probably be putting our house on the market at the end of winter, so we’re doing a lot of little things to prepare for that.  Holly painted the bedroom that I have the computer in yesterday, and we just now got everything hooked back up.  We’re also moving out a lot of our clutter and storing it at a friend’s house.  I still need to install some ground fault outlets in the kitchen and bathroom, but things are starting to look pretty good.  I just hope we can find a house that fits all our search criteria.  We’ve been looking for a couple months now, but haven’t had much luck.

Since my parents moved and now have DSL for their internet access, they no longer needed the cable modem that they bought.  Foolishly, I had been renting one from the cable company for the past four years.  So, my dad let me take his old one and I got that all set up after spending 40 minutes on the phone with the cable company.  It turns out that I was on an old plan, and in order for me to use this new modem, I would have to switch to a new plan.  Sure I would get 100kbs faster internet service, but I would actually get fewer digital cable channels AND have to pay slightly more than I already was.  Here I thought I would be saving money by dropping the $5/month cable modem rental fee.  So in order to keep my rate about the same as what it currently was, I cancelled the digital cable and now just have expanded basic.  That’s all I ever wanted, but at the time I got the cable internet service, it was actually a better deal to get digital cable as well.  I was already feeling pretty screwed over, but Charter had one more bombshell for me when I dropped the equipment off at their office.  I wanted to verify my new monthly rate, and make sure it matched what I had been quoted over the phone.  It did, but then they told me that the internet service speed that I signed up for would be going up $6 per month starting next month.  That’s just great.  I’m getting less stuff than I was yesterday, and have to pay more for it.  I plan on pricing out a dish when we move, and see if that’s a better deal.

Quick Thoughts on Christmas

  • Merry Christmas from Davenport, Iowa. We're spending a few days with my family for the holidays. I'm so full.
  • The Bears beat the Packers tonight, which clinched the NFC North, and gave them a first round bye in the playoffs. What a great Christmas present.
  • On Tuesday, I'm going to try smoking a beef brisket. I've never done one before, but I found a decent recipie for a rub and mop sauce that sounded good. Hopefully it turns out as good as the brisket at Famous Dave's restaurant.
  • Today's lyrics: "May your days be merry and bright."

30

Well, I turned the big three–oh yesterday.  It’s not so bad I guess.  I’m trying to think of any benefits of turning thirty, and the only one I can think of is that I shouldn’t get carded anymore.  It’s not like that is much of a benefit though.

Anyway, I had a pretty good birthday for it being a work day and all.  Holly and I went out to dinner at Jenpachi Japanese Steakhouse.  I thought it was just going to be the two of us, but she surprised me by arranging for nine of our friends to join us for dinner, and had balloons waiting for me at the restaurant.  It was great food, and quite entertaining to watch the chefs put on a show and cook right in front of us.  The fun part was when the owner came out and sang “Happy Birthday” to me.  He has a very loud voice with a very narrow, and fast vibrato, so it’s kind of a nervous or Elmer Fudd type vibrato.  It also reminded a lot of people of the final scene in the classic movie The Christmas Story, where they are at the Chinese restaurant and the waiter is singing “Deck the Halls.”  I also received a Polaroid picture from the restaurant to commemorate the event.  It was a good time.

Watch out!

SF3The Bears just beat the Falcons, and I’m way too wound up to be able to go to sleep yet.  Thank you Lovie Smith for giving Rex Grossman the opportunity to play tonight.  When I heard that Grossman was going to be playing in the second half, my eyes lit up, and I had reason to be excited about the offense.  Rex really did not disappoint, and I would expect him to be named the starter for the rest of the season.  The announcers touched on it, but you could really tell that Grossman was a spark for the Bears’ offense, and everyone seemed to step it up when he got on the field.  The one thing I noticed was the vast majority of Grossman’s passes were on the money.  Accuracy was Orton’s biggest flaw.

Orton did pretty well for a rookie.  He has more than thirteen games of experience under his belt now, and will be a decent back-up for Grossman if he’s needed.  The Bears are in a good situation, in my opinion.  I’m just glad the switch was finally made, because I think the offense will be at its best with Grossman at quarterback.  Watch out Green Bay and Minnesota, because I think a division sweep by the Bears is looking like a definite possibility.

Quick Thoughts 12/16

  • Bears – Falcons Sunday night.  I think the Bears should win this one, but I’m really concerned about the “calf strain” that Mike Brown has.  It’s sounding pretty severe and he might miss the rest of the regular season.
  • I thought of a scenario that would make ESPN’s Sunday night broadcasting team even worse.  Add Tony Siragusa.  But it could be worse.  I can at least be thankful that Brent Musburger doesn’t call NFL games.
  • So my old home-town newspaper, The Clinton Herald, has started an online discussion forum.  I read through one of the threads and just could not take most of the posters seriously because of all the bad grammar and spelling mistakes.  Check out this thread and see how many mistakes you can spot.  (I got tired of counting at fifteen.)  I guess this is a common occurrence in on-line forums, but it certainly annoys me.  Unfortunately, I don’t think most people would be able to find and fix their mistakes even if they were to proof-read.  The most common thing I see, which annoys me the most, is the use of the wrong “there, their, they’re” in a sentence.  Maybe this has always been a problem, and it’s just exposed more because the internet makes it easier for anyone to express their opinion in writing.  That’s what I’m going to keep telling myself at least.
  • Today’s lyrics: “I had a dream that I was 300 pounds.”

Payton Pictures

I don’t have much to say tonight, but thought I’d share some recent pictures of Payton.

Quick Thoughts 12/13

  • I only have one week left of being “twenty-something.”
  • Looks like we’re going to get a heavy, wet snow tonight.  I hope the snowblower works.
  • In some shameless advertising, I put the URL for my blog in our annual Christmas letter that will be going out soon.  I’ll have to start coming up with some good material to keep the new visitors coming back for more.
  • I found this blog post interesting.  My cousin, who lives in South Korea, wrote about trying dog in a restaurant.  I don’t think I’d be so adventurous.
  • Nobody wants to take a stab at the previous post’s lyrics?  I thought those would be easy.

Quick Thoughts 12/9

  • After beating UNI and Drake already, the ISU men’s basketball team goes for state sweep against Iowa tonight.  Hilton will be rocking.  Iowa is without their star point guard, Jeff Horner, and the crowd will be on former Cyclone, Adam Haluska all night.  (Haluska transferred to Iowa after the Larry Eustachy fallout.)  I expect the Cyclones to win by at least ten.
  • The Bears play the Steelers in Pittsburgh on Sunday and this game has me concerned.  Will the Bears be able to score a knock-out blow to an injured Ben Rothlisberger?  The Steelers have struggled lately, and I’m afraid this might be the “rebound” game where they come out angry and go nuts.  Let’s just hope the Bears’ defense continues to go nuts itself.
  • I saw the movie, Just Friends in the theater yesterday.  I had low expectations for it, but it was actually pretty funny.  The premise was something I could relate to since 95% of the girls I liked in high school never wanted to be anything more than “just friends.”  I’d say this movie is probably worth a rental, but make sure you’re in the right mood for it, and don’t have very high expectations.
  • Today’s lyrics:  “Well a lot of good cars are Japanese. Yeah, but when we’re driving far I need my baby, I need my baby next to me.”

Pictures

The Chicago Tribune is running some photos of Bears fans on their website.  I was thinking about submitting a picture of Payton for it.  Should I submit A)SFPayton

or B) Paytonlion?

Which picture should I submit?

Something to ponder

SF3_smallThe Bears are really getting a lot of love from the national media now.  So much so, that I’ve actually read a few articles that are actually talking about the Bears making the Super Bowl.  That really still seems like crazy talk at this point, but when you only give up ten points per game, you should be able to win it all.  Unfortunately, unless the defense either scores, or sets the offense up for an easy score, it’s been very difficult for the Bears to score more than ten points per game.  Unless I start seeing some drastic improvement in the offense, I’m not going to get too excited about the Bears making a big playoff run…yet.

I mentioned the Super Bowl talk to Holly this morning and she floored me by asking if I would go to the Super Bowl if they make it.   She said that you never know if they would make it back again in your lifetime.  (I hope they do!)  Wow, this is a tough one for me.  Unfortunately, we booked a cruise for the week before the Super Bowl, and won’t be returning until the day before the game.  So, in theory, I could still make it to Detroit by Sunday, but it would really be pushing it.  Then there is the cost, which is probably going to be $1k to $2k I bet, between the game ticket, airfare (I’d drive if I had more time), lodging, food, souvenirs, novelties, and party tricks.  I know I’d have a better view of the game by watching it from my couch at home, but there’s something about the atmosphere of being at a big game.  (So far, nothing has topped the experience of being right behind the basket at the 1992 Iowa high school state tourney to witness the “Chris Johanson shot.”  I’ll write more on that another time, but it was amazing.)  Also, tailgating in Detroit in February just isn’t as appealing as somewhere like Miami, which has been a popular place for the Super Bowl in the past.  I’ve only been to one game at Soldier Field, and it was a preseason game too, but the best part about it was the tailgating.  I felt very much at home being around so many other passionate Bears fans, and that’s the worst part about living in Viking and Packer territory…I’m an orphan.  I know that there would be many other “Superfans” at the Superbowl who I could instantly bond with.

So I really do hope the Bears force me to make a tough decision, and if they do, would anyone want to go with me?  (Bears fans only please.)

Quick Thoughts 12/5

  • NEWS-FLASH:  The Bears beat the Packers in Chicago!  I was a senior in high school the last time this happened, but what makes me feel old is how the Bears’ players say they were in grade school at the time.
  • I only saw the highlights from the Bears/Packers game, but it looked like Favre took quite a pounding.  Definitely not enough to keep him from starting next week though.
  • Former ISU Cyclone QB, Sage Rosenfels, led the Miami Dolphins to an impressive comeback win over the Bills.  Sage’s stats, an impressive 22 for 37 for 272 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT.  Not bad for a guy coming in off the bench.
  • Lesson learned:  Check the radar for the entire area of your roadtrip before you leave.  Before going to central Iowa on Saturday I checked the radar and saw that in Minnesota the snow had ended.  What I didn’t know about was the storm that was over central Iowa, and I went right into the worst of it.  It only snowed two to four inches there, but it was coming down pretty hard when I was driving, and the left lane of the interstate was pretty much undrivable.  In one thirty mile stretch there were about a dozen cars in the ditches.  Luckily I didn’t join them, and made it back home without incident, but I was mentally and physically exhausted from driving for eight hours (round trip) in the bad weather.
  • Today’s lyrics: “You’re tearing me apart.  Every, every day.  You’re tearing me apart.  Oh, what I can I say.  You’re tearing me apart.”

I don't know what to say

I’ve really been struggling for blog material lately.  This stuff doesn’t come naturally for me.

  • The Bears just keep winning.  Hopefully they will avenge the last eleven years and beat the Packers in Chicago this weekend. (The Bears haven’t beaten the Pack in Chicago since ‘93.)
  • I finally saw a speed trap on Hwy 52 this morning.  There were four cop cars in the center turnaround near the 37th St exit.  They raised the speed limit to 60 through town last week, and now it looks like they are starting to enforce it.  It’s nice to have all six lanes open now, but it seems like the police could have brought in a lot of money by patrolling the road for the last three years when people were going 70 MPH in the 55 MPH construction zone.
  • Good news for IBM.
  • When in doubt, post a funny picture of your kid. Sml_IMG_0944

Quick Thoughts 11/25

  • I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
  • “Black Friday” is the worst day of the year.  I will never understand how it is better to save a couple of bucks, but have to put up with long lines and hoards of people.  I’ll stay home, and shop online, thank you very much.
  • Missouri lost last week, Colorado ate too much turkey and got blown out today, and now all Iowa State has to do is win tomorrow against Kansas and they can win the Big 12 North division.  For that honor they would get the chance to get destroyed by Texas.  Let’s just hope they can take care of their business tomorrow and not piddle it away like they did last year.
  • Bears vs. Bucs on Sunday and it’s even televised here.  Sweeeeet!

The Bears are for real.

SF3_smallEven I did not expect the Bears to perform like they did yesterday.  Beating the Panthers 13–3 does not sound that impressive, but if you actually watched the game, you’d realize that the Bears defense totally dominated the game.  I had an argument with a co-worker this morning (who happens to be a Green Bay fan) and he said that he wouldn’t call scoring 13 points very dominant.  This is a case where the score doesn’t tell the whole story.  The Bears’ defense had EIGHT sacks, and two interceptions, and totally shut down one of the most potent offenses in the NFC.  They were all over Jake Delhomme, and I think were in his head before the game even started.  Carolina had been averaging almost 28 points per game this season, and the Bears held them to just 3. Yes Brent, the Bears dominated this game.  The Panthers’ lone offensive positive was Steve Smith.  I was really impressed with his speed and ability to make some really tough catches.  He definitely deserves the MVP consideration he’s getting.

With this win, the Bears are finally gaining some respect in the national media.  Here are some quotes that I’ve found:

  •  “I eat my words. The Bears have played somebody. A good team. And they kicked the living tar out of the Panthers.” -Peter King in his cnnsi.com Monday Morning QB column
  • Before Sunday, you could argue that the Bears hadn't beaten even one good offensive team or one top-20 quarterback. But you can't say that any more. Chicago won its sixth in a row and snapped the Panthers' six-game win streak in the process. This one was the win that told us the Bears just might be for real. With that defense and some cold weather to come, Chicago can no longer be taken lightly.” -Don Banks in his cnnsi.com Snap Judgments column.
  • Not quite the response I’d like to hear, but Dr. Z, is starting to admit that he made a mistake in predicting the Bears would only win 3 games this year.
  • As measured with their words as they were merciless with their pass rush, Chicago Bears defenders tried hard after Sunday's victory over the Carolina Panthers to maintain an air of anonymity, to remain the league's most underrated division leader for just a little bit longer. Guess what, guys? The word is out. Or soon will be. The Bears, especially on the defensive side, are pretty darned good. “ – Len Pasquarelli from ESPN.com.
  • “Before the season I couldn't even imagine the Bears competing with the elite of the NFC, but not only are they competing, they are kicking their butts. This team defensively crushed the Panthers and played well on offense also. Muhsin Muhammad had a great game and gave his young quarterback support. The Bears are for real.“ – Eric Allen from ESPN.com

OK guys, you’re getting some national respect now.  Some tough games are on the schedule the next few weeks, so don’t do anything jeopardize what you have earned.  The national media is waiting for you to fail so they don’t look like idiots for picking you to be so bad this year.  Bear down and show them how them how far off the mark they were!

The Best White Elephant Gift Ever

Check out the Jones Soda Holiday Pack.  Along with the beverages, it comes with a spork, moistened towelette and a wine list.  It’s really a pretty clever novelty idea, and part of the proceeds go to charity.  Today a co-worker brought in a pack and a bunch of paper cups for us to sample these unique flavors.

We started with the Turkey and Gravy soda.  This wasn’t too bad, but it didn’t taste much like any turkey I’ve had before.  I noticed a bad after-taste though.  After consulting the label I saw that these sodas have Splenda in them.  I hate the taste of diet sodas!

Next we sampled the Brussel Sprout soda.  I’ve never had brussel sprouts before, and after this experience I will never try them.  This was the most foul tasting thing I’ve ever had in my life.  Half of the people trying it in our group almost lost their breakfast.  The stench of the soda alone should have been enough to keep us away, but we all wanted to complete this meal.

Up third was the Wild Herb Stuffing soda.  This really just tasted like bad club soda, but had a slight herby after-taste.  It was pretty easy to drink after the brussel sprout soda though.

The fourth course in our liquid meal was the Cranberry soda.  This actually smelled like cranberries and had a normal soda fizz that the others were lacking.  This was by far the best part of the meal, as it was actually drinkable.

For desert, we had the Pumpkin Pie soda.  I think it could have used some whipped cream because it was pretty disgusting by itself.  I think it had a few too many spices in it, and not enough pumpkin.  Even so, it was still much better than the brussel sprout soda.

Personally I would have preferred it if these were not diet sodas.  I can’t imagine anyone drinking all five whole bottles by themselves either.  Even though most of these were really nasty, it was still a lot of fun to have eight people all trying them together and watch everyone’s reactions to the tastes.  I think I’m going to go pick up a couple of these packs because I have a couple of people in mind who it would make an excellent gift for.

Quick Thoughts 11/17

  • So long 50’s and 60’s.  It was a chilly 3 degrees at my house this morning.
  • The Packers and Vikings play Monday night, so that means the Bears are televised here on Sunday!
  • I always thought Teletubbies were really strange, but I think the Boohbahs are even weirder.  They freak me out actually.
  • Today’s lyrics: “I smoke old stogies I have found.  Short, but not too big around.”

Superfan Kahn's Thoughts 11/14

SF3_small

  • The Bears have now won 5 games in a row.
  • Yesterday’s Wind Bowl might go down as one of the most memorable crazy weather games in Bears’ history.  It’s hard to top the Fog Bowl though, but at least you could see all the craziness in the Wind Bowl.
  • Wearing the orange jerseys is a bad idea.  They should only be worn in video games.
  • Just a sprain?  That injury to Cedric Benson’s knee sure looked pretty bad.  Ouch!
  • The Bears have allowed only 107 points to be scored against them this season.  That’s the fewest in the NFL.
  • Why does all the national media rip on the NFC North?  From what I can tell, the AFC East and NFC West are pretty lousy as well.  The NFC North now has 16 wins between the teams in the division.  The AFC East only has 14 and the NFC West has 15.  The media’s beloved Patriots are 5–4 and yet are still in the top ten of most the power rankings I’ve seen.  The Bears are 6–3 now and barely cracking into the top half of the 32 team rankings.  Yeah they’ve had a pretty easy schedule so far, have played pretty poorly the last couple of games, but have still won those games.  I guess it’s just hard to break people’s pre-conceived notions of who’s good and bad from before the season started.  The Bears play the Panthers next, so a win against them would definitely help in gaining some respect.  The NFC North is not an elite division by any means, and it’s really not that good honestly.  My point is just that there are some other bad divisions out there too, but the focus is always on how atrocious the NFC North is.  Spread the love people!

I'm Batman

I came down with a nasty bug Friday night and spent all day Saturday in bed with a 102.5 degree fever.  The fever finally broke while I was sleeping last night and I woke up in a pool of sweat.  I’m still not 100%, but I do feel a lot better today.  Anyway, while I’ve been under the weather, Holly picked up a couple of movies for me to watch.  I watched Batman Begins this morning, and will watch The Longest Yard later tonight.

I loved Batman Begins.  This movie totally restored the Batman movie franchise.  I remember being so excited to see Batman Forever when it came out, and then being completely disappointed in it after seeing it.  Because of that one movie, I didn’t want anything to do with Batman anymore, even though he used to be my favorite super-hero.  So you can see why I was very skeptical of Batman Begins.  Thankfully, Joel Schumacher didn’t touch this project, and the Batman glory days have returned.  The main reason I enjoyed this movie is because they had a lot of character development with Bruce Wayne and Batman.  Batman Forever was just action for the sake of action and had zero character development.  The only thing that I wish they would have done with Batman Begins, is to use Danny Elfman’s original Batman movie theme.  That was such a great super-hero theme, and would have been good for some consistency across all the movies.  It will be interesting to see how they tie any more new Batman movies into the existing movies, but I definitely look forward to seeing the next one they make.

Quick Thoughts 11/11

  • The Bears are 13 point favorites this weekend with the 49ers coming to town.  Some guy named Cody Pickett will be the QB for San Francisco.  I can see the Bears’ defense licking their chops, for what should be a huge day for them.
  • The Cyclones play Colorado at 6PM on Saturday.  The game is going to be televised on FSN, so be sure to watch it!
  • One thing I’m not clear on with this bird flu, is whether they think there will be a risk of contracting it by eating poultry.  It seems to me that it would have to be contracted from a live, infected bird, but I’m no expert.  Does anyone else know?
  • I usually have someone in mind who I think will know the song lyrics of the day.  But lately someone other than who I think will respond has been getting them.  That’s not a bad thing, and I don’t want to discourage anyone from responding.  Today’s lyrics will be a little tougher for some people, but I know one person who will probably know them right away.  So with that, here are today’s lyrics: “This time tomorrow, reckon where I’ll be. Hadn’t it been for Grayson, I’d a been in Tennessee.”

Quick Thoughts 11/9

  • Congratulations to my buddy Andy who won an XBOX 360 in the “Every Ten Minutes” contest through Mountain Dew.  Plus he won a party pack that included a bunch of hats and t-shirts, of which he gave me one of each.  Thanks man.
  • “Survivor” is starting to get pretty good now.  It always helps when there’s at least one idiot around to provide entertainment value.  Last week’s episode was one of the best in a long time.
  • I watched a little bit of VH1’s new show, “But Can They Sing?”  I’ll save you some time by telling you the answer is a resounding “NO.”  Don’t bother watching this show.
  • You have to try this: “telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl”.  It’s ascii Star Wars.  Sounds like this guy started in 1997 and is now about halfway through the original movie.  That’s an insane amount of hours.
  • Today’s lyrics: “Now if I wasn’t such a weenie, do you think you’d still love me?  Pretending I’m an airplane on the living room floor.”  That’s song writing at its best right there.

Quick Thoughts 11/7

  • Tylenol is a wonder drug.  Payton is getting his two year molars and they are really making him miserable.  He’s had a fever, and they are causing him quite a bit of pain.  However, twenty minutes after giving him some Tylenol, he’s running around and back to his normal self.
  • What’s the point of having a blimp fly over a game that’s in a dome?  I’ve never understood that.
  • Bears win, are now 5–3, and have a two game lead in their division.  They must beat the 49ers this weekend because the schedule gets a lot tougher after that (Panthers, Bucs, Packers, Steelers, Falcons, Packers, Vikings).  I know the Packers are bad this year, but Favre has quite a history of being a Bear slayer.  I like the Bears’ chances against them this year though, and I’ll go out on a limb and predict a sweep of the Packers.  The Bears will finish at 9–7 and win the NFC North.
  • The Cyclones are now bowl-eligible after destroying Kansas State this weekend.  So why does the season seem like such a big disappointment?
  • Today’s lyrics should be easy: “If I’m not blind why can’t I see, that a circle can’t fit where a square should be.”

Friday, November 04, 2005

Quick Thouhts 11/4

  • I subbed in bowling league again last night and did quite well.  I had a 200 game, and wound up with a 524 series.  With that, my 147 average should jump all the way up to 154.  You gotta love that early in the year when one week can affect the average so dramatically.
  • I’m becoming quite fond of flavored coffees.  Today I’m drinking Irish creme, but also enjoy hazelnut, chocolate macadamia nut, chocolate caramel brownie, and vanilla creme.  This is just regular coffee, but the beans have been soaked in the flavors.   Good stuff.
  • Have I mentioned how much I enjoy listening to Coldplay lately?  Great music.
  • The Bears will beat the Saints this weekend, 17–6.  (I haven’t picked against the Bears yet, but yes, I probably will when they play some tougher teams down the road in a few weeks.)
  • The Cyclones can become bowl-eligible this weekend with a win over Kansas State.  The game is in Ames and should be winnable.
  • Today’s lyrics: “Is it getting better?  Or do you feel the same?”

Ch-ch-ch-changes

As I mentioned in the last post, I went as Superfan Kahn for Halloween this year. That means I shaved my goatee, and just had a moustache. Sporting just a moustache is not something that looks particularly good on me, wouldn’t you agree? IMG_0883

My dad and his brothers have always been able to pull it off, but I don’t think I ever will. So by the end of the day Monday, my face was clean-shaven. I’ll have to post a picture of this for my mom since she seems to like the no facial hair look the best on me. Sorry Mom, but it won’t last long. It’s almost winter time, so that means it’s time to grow a full beard.

UPDATED: Ok Mom, as promised, here’s a picture for you.

Quick Thoughts 10/31

  • Happy Halloween!  I’m dressed as Superfan Kahn today.
  • Here’s a picture of the pumpkins we carved this year (I did the bat, Holly did the reaper, and the traditional one was for Payton):

IMG_0857

  • Fox made a very nice decision yesterday by showing the end of the Bears-Lions game after the Panthers destroyed the Vikings.  I expected them to cut to the start of the Eagles-Broncos, but instead I was able to see the final two minutes of regulation and overtime in the Bears-Lions game.  What a finish!
  • The Bears control their own destiny now, but are sitting very nicely in their weak division.
  • Brett Favre, welcome to the five interception club.
  • I was shocked to find out that the Iowa State game had been on TV here this past Saturday. I had no idea it was going to be picked up, and would have liked to seen the route they put on Texas A&M.  One more win and they’ll go to a bowl.  Too bad the Big 12 North championship isn’t very likely anymore, but maybe they are peaking at the right time.  The Colorado game will be big, but we have to hope the Buffaloes collapse too.
  • Revenge of the Sith comes out on DVD tomorrow, and I’ll definitely be picking it up.  I was scouring the ads in the weekend paper to see which store would have the lowest price, but not a single place listed their price in the ads.  They just listed it as “Low Price.”  This is a practice that really gets my blood boiling.  I suppose their thinking is that they just want to get you into the store to find out the price, but I have better things to do.  Usually Target or Best Buy have the lowest prices on new releases, and I’ll probably go to Target since there are less salespeople trying to push junk on you.  I hate going to Best Buy and being asked if I want to subscribe to magazines while checking out, and it really annoys me when they ask for my phone number while checking out.  They have no business asking for that, and I never give it to them.
  • We’ve taken a lot of pictures in October.  Here’s a link to the gallery.

Bears Win!

The Bears just beat the Lions 19–13 in OT, and I couldn’t be happier.  Here are some celebration pictures.  (It helps that Payton is going as a lion for Halloween this year.)

Mindless post

For lack of anything better to post today, I will provide a little Google entertainment that I saw Ryan post about today.

Instructions: Visit Google.com, put your first name and the word “needs” in quotations (e.g., “kahn needs”) in the search box, and then click the Google Search button. Write down the top 10 results.

  1. Kahn needs to show more maturity
  2. Kahn needs someone to teach his warriors how to use Earth’s weapons
  3. Kahn needs to retire or if he refuses they should sell him away
  4. Kahn needs the committee’s help
  5. Kahn needs to decide who he wishes to serve as a fiduciary
  6. Kahn needs to have the physical presence of a drumkit even if he never strikes it in a traditional means
  7. Kahn needs six weeks for finger to heal
  8. Kahn needs to stick to very well-made clothes of fine fabrics, preferably made by European designers
  9. Kahn needs a more intricate plot or a more interesting character to sustain this series
  10. Kahn needs to work on reflexes or else he will fade and leave a dark mark on his once illustrious career

I like number two the best, which of course, is in reference to Mortal Kombat.  Most of the other Kahn hits were in reference to the German goal-keeper, Oliver Kahn.

What is the best result you get when you do this with your name?  Post and let me know.

Quick Thoughts 10/27

  • Rocky 6 is in the works.  Can you believe Stallone will be 60 when they film this?    I also heard Rambo 4 is being worked on too.  Go with what you know Sly.
  • I’m going to play racquetball tonight for the first time in about six months.  I’ll be sore tomorrow, but at least Dan has recovered enough from his surgery to start playing again.
  • Today’s lyrics: “What we have here is failure to communicate.”  (I guess I’m on a spoken word at the beginning of songs, lyric kick.)

Quick Thoughts 10/25

  • For the first time in my life I had milk spoil on me and experienced the awful smell that goes with it.  It reminded me a lot of the smell of Payton’s messy diapers.
  • VH1 has another “I Love the 80’s” series on this week.  This time it’s “I Love the 80’s 3D,” and I was impressed with all the stuff I remembered from 1980 and 1981 (Pepsi Challenge, Intellivision, “You Can’t Do That on Television”, etc).   I was only 4, 5, and 6 during these years.  In honor of yet another 80’s pop culture nostalgia show I’m listening to my 80’s playlist this morning.
  • While watching TV last night, I saw a commercial for Name That Tune 80’s Edition DVD Game.  I really want this game, but I don’t think anyone would want to play me because I’d totally dominate at it.  Schall-ange?  (Cosby show reference when Bill was in a tap dancing duel, for those who didn’t catch it or if it wasn’t clear in print.)
  • Well nobody even took a stab at the last lyrics I posted, “If the shoe fits, I want you to wear it and wear it good.”  That was Tony! Toni! Tone!, “If I had no Loot,” circa 1993.  So with that in mind, I’ll make the lyrics a little easier today.
  • Today’s lyrics: “F: So what are you doing back?  M: Well, I sat back and thought about the things we used to do.  It really meant a lot to me.  You mean a lot to me.  F: I really mean that much to you?  M:….”

Superfan Kahn's Thoughts 10/23

SF3Ah yes, the Bears are back to .500.  At least a record of 3–3 is a little easier on the eyes, than a losing record when you see that at the top of the NFC North division.  I was fortunate enough to see most of the Bears’ games the past two weeks as well.  The defense has certainly looked good against some struggling offenses, and hopefully they can continue that trend against the Lions, Saints, and 49ers in the next three weeks.  If you only allow 3 or 6 points a game, chances are you will win, no matter how much your offense struggles.

Thomas Jones deserves to go to the Pro Bowl.  The man is playing with a bad ankle and is still rushing for over 100 yards a game.  Cedric who?

The best part about the Bears’ 3–3 record is that two of the three wins came against division opponents, and they are 2–0 right now in the division.  Beating the Lions next week would be huge since it would put the Bears a game up and give them the season sweep against the Lions who appear, somehow, to be one of the best teams in the division.

I also watched the Packers/Vikings game today, which was an excellent game that went down to the last second.  One thing that really annoyed me in the first half, when the Packers were up 17–0, is how the announcers were pretty much saying the Packers would win the NFC North just because they have Brett Favre.  I came to the realization that even after Favre retires, I’ll still have to listen to the announcers talk about him during every game.  When calling a Packers’ game, Madden will say, “Well that was a great pass that Aaron Rogers had, but boy, you can tell he’s just not having as much fun playing the game as Brett Favre did.”  Other announcers will wonder how much better the team would be if Favre was still playing, much like they constantly do with Randy Moss during Vikings games now.  Sorry guys, but Favre is only one guy,  the rest of the team has the injury bug this year, and they have only won one game.    I don’t see the Packers winning the division.  The Bears have a good defense and solid running game, and those two things win ball games.

One other thing on the Packers/Vikings game is that it was nice to see former Bear, Paul Edinger win the game for the Vikings (or to put it another way, BEAT THE PACKERS) on the last second, 56 yard field goal.  I had always liked Edinger, but last season for the Bears he became a bit of a liability and had some problems kicking in Soldier Field.  While I don’t think the front office made the right move by replacing him with NY Jets cast-off, Doug Brien, who also was waived a couple weeks ago, I found it comforting last week that Edinger missed 3 field goals last week against the Bears.  Okay, so one was a bad snap and he never had a chance to kick it, but the fact remains that the Bears are probably better off without Edinger, and he’s probably better off playing for a dome team.  Thanks Paul for knowing when to make them, and knowing when to shank them.

Some of the best cover songs of all time

Now playing: Cake - I Will Survive

What makes a good cover song?  In my opinion, it’s when the cover is better than the original, and not identical in style.  Now I’m sure this list will draw some debate, and maybe I’ve forgotten a song or two, so please let me know what you think of my top ten cover songs of all time.

  • 10. Tesla – “Signs” (OK it’s very similar to the original, but it’s a live version.)
  • 9.  Whitney Houston – “I Will Always Love You” (I’d like to sing this for karaoke, but I think Holly would pretend she didn’t know me.)
  • 8.  Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Higher Ground” (Kick-ass song.)
  • 7.  The Gourds – “Gin and Juice” (Commonly mistaken as a Phish version.)
  • 6.  Orgy – “Blue Monday” (Far better than the original.)
  • 5.  Alien Ant Farm – “Smooth Criminal”  (Great video spoofing Jacko as well.)
  • 4.  Johnny Cash – “Hurt” (I’ve never liked NIN, and this song really fits Cash’s depressing musical style.)
  • 3.  Jimi Hendrix – “All Along the Watchtower”  (Originally a Bob Dylan tune, but most people only know the Hendrix version.)
  • 2.  Guns ‘n Roses – “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”  (Sorry Bob, but I enjoy the covers of your songs more than the originals.)
  • 1.  Cake – “I Will Survive” (This has a great bass line and is definitely not disco.)

Covers that didn’t even come close to making my list include Pearl Jam’s “Last Kiss,” Britney Spears’ “My Prerogative,” and Tom Jones’ “Kiss.”

A couple of bands that specialize in covers that are pretty funny are Richard Cheese and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.  Richard Cheese covers popular songs in a lounge singer style, while Me First… cover popular songs in a punk style.  Me First… do a great version of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road,” in which the funniest part is the talking part with different lyrics at the beginning.  Definitely check these guys out if you come across their material.

Quick Thoughts 10/19

I’ve been on vacation this week and haven’t been around a computer a whole lot.  Plus I’m only using my computer at home for a little while at a time because my monitor keeps making bad smells.  I did order a new Dell LCD monitor on Monday and hope it arrives by the end of the week.  I actually got a refurbished one and save some money.  My PC is a refurbished Dell that I got about 4 years ago, and it’s never given me any trouble.  Anyway, here are my thoughts for the day.

  • The Bears have certainly looked good against their division opponents.  Too bad they don’t play the Packers until December.
  • I think it’s officially safe to call the Cyclones’ season a big disappointment.
  • We were back in Iowa this past weekend and I probably visited the house I grew up in for the last time.
  • Diving from Davenport to Rochester is about 15 minutes faster than driving from Clinton to Rochester.  I made it home from Davenport in exactly four hours yesterday.
  • Payton got to ride in a tractor and a combine this weekend, and he loved it!

IMG_0808

  • I forgot to put Team America, World Police on the list of crappy movies I’ve seen in the past couple months.  That’s 98 minutes of my life I’d like to have back.
  • Today’s lyrics: “If the shoe fits, I want you to wear it, and wear it good.”

Quick Thoughts 10/12

  • I finally saw Napoleon Dynamite last night, and it really wasn’t all that funny.  The characters were definitely out there, and I guess just the characters in general were what made the movie mildly entertaining.  There are about five minutes of footage after the credits, and I thought that was the funniest part.  I’d give the movie a C-.
  • I haven’t had time to watch many movies lately, and it seems like when I get a chance to watch them I end up being disappointed with them.  That was the case for Napoleon Dynamite, Meet the Fockers, and Constantine.  I did like National Treasure though.  Can anyone recommend a good movie to me, so I don’t end up wasting my time?
  • I’d better get a new monitor soon.  It was making a nasty smell again last night like it’s getting too hot, and the horizontal size and position isn’t holding anymore.  Hopefully those aren’t toxic fumes being emitted.
  • Since nobody has come up with the correct song yet from yesterday’s lyrics, I won’t be posting any new songs today.  Somebody has to know yesterday’s song.

Quick Thoughts 10/11

  • Another one of my friends from my old college dorm floor has started a blog.  Welcome to the world of blogging Brian.  He always had an entertaining webpage in college (and look, it still exists) so I figure his blog should be an entertaining read.
  • I kind of hope the White Sox win the World Series this year.  I don’t really like them, but if they win this year, and since the Red Sox won last year, then there is no question the Cubs are the team with the most hard luck in the league.  Wait, is that really a good thing?
  • Actually, I’ll be glad when baseball is done and Fox starts airing their season premiers.
  • Today’s lyrics are a little tougher I think, so I’m giving more.  Here you go: “Did you find the directing sign on the straight and narrow highway?  Would you mind a reflecting sign?  Just let it shine, within your mind, and show you the colors that are real.”  Hint:  This song has a cowbell.

Apples == good!

I am done predicting football games for this season.  Both the Cyclones and Bears broke my heart this weekend, so I will give them the silent treatment for at least a week.  Maybe it’s my fault for liking teams that are chronic disappointments, but I really thought they’d do better than this.  Anyway, enough sulking over football, and onto something cheerier.

Yesterday was a perfect fall day, sunny and in the upper 50’s, so we went to Northwoods Orchard just outside of Rochester.  It’s an 88 acre apple orchard, but also has a big pumpkin patch, corn mazes, and some animals (goats, rabbits, chickens, pigs) for the kids to pet.  It’s free except for the corn maze and any apples or pumpkins you buy.  We went out to the orchard and sampled some of the apples.  They were yummy enough that we ended up buying a bag.  Payton seemed to enjoy himself, and it made for a good afternoon of entertainment.  It also made me want to have an apple tree of my own, but that won’t happen until we get a bigger yard.  Anyway, here are some pictures from the orchard.

Quick thoughts 10/7

  • Congratulations to my parents who sold their house yesterday after just ten days on the market!
  • I subbed for the old bowling team last night and didn’t do so well.  That’s usually what happens when I haven’t bowled in eight months and the weight of the ball starts wearing on me.  I expect good things next week though.
  • After almost nine years, I think my PC monitor is starting to crap-out on me.  Should I go with CRT or flat panel LCD?
  • So the Cyclones play Baylor in Ames tomorrow.  Hopefully this game won’t even be close.  I’m hoping for about 42–10.  Go Clones!
  • The Bears play the Cleveland Oranges this week and it should be a winnable game for the Bears.  I expect it to be a low scoring game, about 14–10 Bears.  Hopefully the Bears’ offense made a lot of adjustments during the bye week.  The Bears have a pretty soft schedule the next five or six weeks, so if they can just take advantage of that, they should be able to take control of this division of second-class teams.
  • Today’s lyrics: “Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl.”

Quick Thoughts 10/5

  • I think I should work on my beard and enter this competition.  The free-style categories are the crazy looking ones that are the most interesting.  I just can’t imagine walking down the street with one of those on my face.
  • Someone is throwing the switch for winter today.  It was humid and 80 yesterday.  Tomorrow it’s not supposed to make it out of the 40’s for a high.
  • I was watching the Adam Corolla Project last night on TLC and what amazed me the most was the cost of some really dumpy properties he was looking at in California.  I knew the market was terribly high there, but when I saw the crap you get for $750,000 I was totally shocked.  How does anyone afford to live there?  I guess there are interest-only mortgages, but if the market goes south, you are totally screwed.
  • Today’s song lyrics: “Make up your mind.  Decide to walk with me, around the lake tonight.”

Quick Thoughts 10/4

  • I picked up the new Nickelback album, All the Right Reasons today.  So far it seems pretty good.  They are using a lot more acoustic guitar than they have in past albums.  I think after the success Chad Kroeger had with “Hero,” he has followed a similar formula for their radio-friendly songs.  Of their five albums, I’d probably rank this one as my third favorite, but it might have potential to move up to number two as I listen to it more.  Silver Side Up holds the top spot among the Nickelback albums, and I don’t see it getting displaced.
  • Brach’s Star Brites peppermints are addictive.
  • How about that, the Bears didn’t play this past weekend, but they are now back in first place in the division with a 1–2 record.  My 9–7 prediction should definitely be enough to win the division.
  • Here are today’s song lyrics: “What makes you so jumpy?  Why can’t you sit still?  Oh yeah.”

I suppose I should write something

I haven’t felt much like writing the past few days, and for that matter, I haven’t felt much like doing anything.  I recovered from my stomach bug, but am now fighting a cold that Holly had last week.  Mornings are the toughest with a cold, and it hasn’t helped that Payton has been waking up an hour earlier that normal the past few days.  I think his two year molars are pushing again because he’s been pretty crabby lately and not sleeping very well.  Hopefully they’ll push on through soon because they seem to bother him for a few days, then be fine for a week or two, and then bother him again.

So the Lions fans are upset because they didn’t like the way the replay review turned out on their would-be game-winning touchdown.  I don’t feel very sorry for them because they essentially won an extra game last year against the Bears on a similar review that went in their favor.  It all evens out in time.

If you get a chance, listen to Coldplay’s “Fix You.”  It’s a song that starts out with just an organ and vocals and then builds throughout the song with more instruments getting added each verse.  Actually, I think I like this song more after seeing the video.  There isn’t anything special about the video, but the last half is from a live performance and it just made me really get into the song and feel the emotion of it.  For some reason, Coldplay’s music reminds me of Pink Floyd.  Has anyone else thought the same, or am I just crazy?

Sick

Well I was lucky enough yesterday to get that stomach bug that Payton had earlier in the week. I guess even washing my hands religiously doesn't prevent every illness. This is the third stomach bug I've had in the past year. Before that, I hadn't had one in over ten years. Blech.

Remembering the 80's

Back in the 80’s I actually watched commercials.  For some reason, today I started recalling a lot of old products from the 80’s that I remember from their commercials.  A lot of them happen to be breakfast cereals.

  • Croonchy Stars cereal.  This one didn’t last long, but I thought the commercials were hilarious.  Ryan got me a box of these for my birthday one year and this had to be the most entertaining cereal box ever made.  It’s hard to tell from the pictures in the link above, but I do remember having to find how many times the word “RUTEBEGA” appears on the box.  Then it said that occurrence didn’t count, and then every other time you find it they have some funny reason for why that occurrence doesn’t count either.  I wish all the text in those pictures was readable.
  • Nintendo cereal. “Nin-ten-do, it’s a cereal for breakfast!  Nin-ten-do.”
  • Crispy Critters cereal.  “Hello my name is Crispy, how do you do?  Crispy Critters cereal is entirely new.  It’s indubitably, indubitably, indubitably, DELICIOUS!”
  • Mr. Gameshow.  I remember in the commercial a family playing and Mr. Gameshow saying “Correct-a-mundo J. J….”  Anyone remember how the rest of that went?
  • It’s probably sad that I can still recite the whole McDonald’s menu song from memory.  Remember that one with the campaign where they put a square record in the newspaper and if your copy made it all the way through the song you win the grand prize?  “Big Mac, McDLT, a quarter pounder with some cheese, Fillet o’ Fish, a hamburger, a cheeseburger, a Happy Meal, McNuggets, tasty golden french fries, regular and larger sizes…” etc.  It’s not as impressive to type it out and you probably just think I found it somewhere on the web.  Ask me to recite it verbally sometime when you see me.

Quick Thoughts 9/27

  • Is it just me, or does anyone else find the Burger King commercials with their “King” mascot rather disturbing?  The football ones were kind of funny, but the rest of them just leave me scratching my head.
  • Payton has been battling a stomach bug this week.  It looks like he’s over the hump now, but man those are never fun.  It made me remember the time when my dad took my sister and I to a movie when my mom was out of town.  My sister was acting a little funny, but said she was fine when my dad asked her if she was okay.  Not more than two minutes later, she turned to my dad and ralphed all over him.  It’s pretty funny when you think about it now, right Dad?
  • It looks like ABC is going to be broadcasting the ISU/Nebraska game on Saturday.
  • Here are today’s song lyrics: “You know our love was meant to be, the kind of love that lasts forever.”  Should be an easy one.

Bear with me

SF3_smallSo after getting my hopes up after last week’s game against the Lions, they came crashing down yesterday when the Bears fell apart against the Bengals.  Yesterday’s game was the first one I’d actually been able to see, and there wasn’t much about it that I liked.  For the most part, I thought the defense did pretty well.  They were put in some tough positions after some turnovers, but for most of the game, they really didn’t do that badly.  They kept the running game in check, but I don’t think they were able to put enough pressure on the QB.  Things fell apart at the end, but they had been on the field for most of the day.  The defense can’t do it all.

The Bears’ offense, well that didn’t look any different from what I’d seen last year.  Something is definitely wrong when I find myself happier when the Bears are on defense because I think they have a better chance of scoring than when on offense.  Orton had a horrible game and threw five interceptions.  At least he is a rookie, and Harrington and Culpepper can’t use that excuse.  It’s now Favre’s turn to throw five picks in a game.  Most of Orton’s interceptions were a result of bad decisions, and only one was really not completely on him.  The first pick of the day probably should have been caught, but it was slightly behind the receiver, and ended up getting tipped up in the air, and dramatically caught by the Bengals.  The good news is that Orton really can’t do much worse, it’s still early in the season, and the rest of the division is struggling just as much.

I guess the Bears are a Jeckyl and Hyde team this year.  One week they play great and rack up 38 points, and the next they fall off a cliff and can’t even get a first down for most of the game.  If they play bad like this in their next game against the Browns, I’m going to have to back off my prediction of at least 9 wins, but for now, I’m going to stick with it.

Quick Thoughts 9/23

  • Iowa State plays Army tonight at 7PM on ESPN2.  I’m not going to say much about this game because it really should be an easy game for the Cyclones.  My prediction is ISU 38 – Army 10.
  • The Bears play the Bengals on Sunday.  I’m excited because the local CBS affiliate is airing that game, and it will be the first one of the season I get to see.  I doubt Chicago will put up 38 points again this week, but I’m still predicting them to win.  The Bengals have done well so far this year, but they have not played very good teams yet.  I expect Chicago’s defense to tone the Bengal’s offense down a notch.  I predict Bears 24 – Bengals 17.
  • I just added a poll to yesterday’s post.  Be sure to go back and cast a vote.
  • Usually, I listen to music when writing my blog entries.  From now on, in my “Quick Thoughts” entries, I will post some lyrics from a song and if you know the song it’s from and the artist, post the answer in the comments.  Please try not to use search engines to figure out the answer though.  So, with that, here is today’s lyric: “Maybe I’m just blind.”

Wash Your Hands!

Yes, I’m a bit of a germophobe.  I don’t take it to extremes, but I always make a point not to touch the door with my bare hand in a public restroom.  That’s why I  prefer paper towels over those air dryers.  With the air dryers you have to either suck it up and touch the door or wait for someone else to open the door for you.  I hate making that decision.  It just amazes me that some people will come out of the bathroom stalls and proceed directly to the door without washing.  I sure hope that extremely thin toilet paper found in public restrooms did its job.  That is just the absolute worst.  I’m never as surprised when guys don’t wash after using the urinal, but it still disgusts me.  Luckily, I’d say over 95% of the people I see in the restrooms at work, wash their hands.

Anyway, a study was released that found only about 75% of men wash their hands after using public restrooms.   I found a lot of in-depth statistics from this study on the washup.org website.  They said the worst results were at an Atlanta Braves game where only 63% of men washed their hands.  I think that’s a surprisingly high result actually, and would have expected it to be under 50%.  You just don’t see many people washing their hands after using the “trough” at stadiums.  The same goes for bars.  There is no way the percentages would be that high if they had monitored bars and other places that serve alcohol.  I think back to some of the college dive bars in Ames and what they had for facilities.  Most did not have soap, and I can recall one that had some problems with the toilet one night, so people were using the sink instead.  In that case, it was probably best not to wash.  I theorize that number of hand washers at an establishment is inversely proportional to the amount of alcohol being served.  What do you think?

Do you wash your hands after using the bathroom?
Yes, always
Sometimes
Only after a #2
Never

Pluck

I’m trying out a new RSS feeder today called Pluck.  Does anyone else use this or any other RSS feeder software?  I’d like to hear your thoughts.  So far it seems decent, but it annoys me that some sites update their webpages, but their RSS XML feeds are very stale.  That kind of defeats the purpose of using the RSS feed.

Quick Thoughts 9/20

  • I was flipping through the channels and came across a pretty funny music video tonight.  I couldn’t figure out who it was, since I didn’t catch it from the beginning.  It looked like a home video of an 80’s hair band called Sphynkter.  I was totally shocked to find out that it was the Backstreet Boys and their song “Just Want You to Know.”  The video was hilarious, but both Holly and I both agreed that the song wasn’t very good.
  • I had only watched one previous episode of Rock Star INXS before tonight, but decided to watch the finale.  Who has a name like J.D. Fortune anyway?  I highly doubt that is his given name.  Anyway, I think he sounds an awful lot like Michael Hutchence, so that will help.  I thought Marty had too much of a David Bowie look going on, and I find that disturbing.
  • I caught the last half of a program on the Science Channel about parallel universes.  Apparently there is this M-theory that they think can explain the singularity at the beginning of the big bang and follow time back before that even.  It has something to do with the eleventh dimension.  This was pretty deep stuff and it might have made more sense had I seen the entire program.  That kind of stuff just fascinates me.
  • Thanks to everyone for posting comments yesterday.  I’m more inclined to write when I get feedback.  My dad reads my blog about every day, but I can’t get him to post comments.  I don’t know what else to do, since talking about TV couldn’t even get him to post.  He usually has two to three VCRs going taping all the shows he likes that are on at the same time.  So he knows his TV.  Maybe calling him out will get him to post.

TV Talk

I really don’t watch that many prime time network television shows.  There are a handful of shows that I am loyal to, but sometimes it feels like work to make sure I don’t miss any episodes.  About two years ago, I started watching all of the CSI shows.  Well that right there eats up three hours a week.  I am very close to not watching CSI: Miami anymore.  This would be an excellent show if it didn’t star David Caruso.  I don’t know of anyone that likes him, and actually some CSI fans won’t watch this show at all because of him.  Fortunately, I do like the supporting cast, (especially Emily Procter) and they make it tolerable to watch.  Something was different with the directing though in last night’s episode, and it really annoyed me.  There were way too many slow motion scenes and “cutesy” film tricks.  It’s like they were trying too hard to be creative, and it just ended up looking forced.  If they kill off any of the supporting cast, I’m done with that show.

Survivor started again last week.  I taped it, but when I went to watch it, I found that I had recorded static.  I located the source of the problem, so that shouldn’t happen again, but in the meantime, I missed the first episode.  Luckily, the CBS website has quite a bit of video from that episode and I got a good feel for what happened.  I’d hate to say it, but I think Survivor is starting to get stale.  Not many shows last eleven seasons, but when you pack two seasons into each year, you just end up burning it out due to over-exposure.  I’m just not getting excited to watch Survivor like I did the first few seasons.

While it seems to be getting cruder with every episode, The Family Guy is still my favorite show on TV.  No other show makes me laugh out loud so much.  All the references to pop culture things I remember from my childhood are priceless.  One of my favorites is when the Kool-Aid Man bursts through the courtroom wall.  OH YEAH!  I’m so happy the Family Guy is back on the air.

Superfan Kahn's Thoughts 9/18

SF3I predicted the Bears would beat the Lions, but I had no idea they would totally dominate the game like they did.  My prediction was 13–6 Bears, and the final was 38–6.  38 points!  And when I look at the box score, 24 of those were actually scored by the offense.  It looks like they could have had 6 more points as well, but had missed FG’s.  Even though I predicted the Lions’ point total correctly, they actually did get a TD, but missed the PAT.

The Bears have a lot to be optimistic about after today.  Their running game gained almost 200 yards, and Orton didn’t have any interceptions.  The defense had five interceptions, one for a TD, and two sacks.  I have Chicago’s defense in one of my fantasy football leagues, and today’s performance turned in 35 points for me; better than any offensive player on my team.  The Bears played very good today, while the rest of their division really sucked it up.

Today was the beginning of the end of Joey Harrington, I’m afraid.  It isn’t too often a QB throws five interceptions in a game, but he did exactly that today.  Don’t worry Joey, you have some company in this fine category because the Vikings’ QB Daunte Culpepper also threw five picks today.  I don’t think Jonathan Quinn or Craig Krentzel even have that accomplishment on their resumes.

Next week will be an interesting match-up against the very hot Cincinnati Bengals.  Hopefully the Bears can keep the Bengals’ offense under control, and can score 20+ points again themselves.  I’ll write more about this game later in the week.  In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy today’s victory.  Bear down!

Quick Thoughts 9/15

  • Finally, something that might make listening to Brent Musburger tolerable!  He has to be the most annoying sports broadcaster ever.
  • Survivor starts again tonight, and it looks like an ex-NFL quarterback is amongst the cast members.  That QB is Gary Hogeboom, and rumor has it that he’s keeping it a secret that he played in the NFL and isn’t using his real last name.
  • I think I learned in English class that if you are going to have a bulleted list, you have to have at least three bullets.  So, with that, I now have a legal list.

Superfan Kahn's Thoughts 9/14

SF3_smallWell the Bears lost their first game of the season, and that was one of the games I was figuring they could win, but I’m still optimistic.  It’s unfortunate that I don’t get to see many of Chicago’s games living in Minnesota, and the radio isn’t an option either.  I pretty much have to follow them online, or read about the game after it’s over.  The Chicago Sun-Times is my primary source of information, and I prefer it over the Chicago Tribune online edition because they don’t require you to register in order to read the articles.  That really annoys me.

So the Bears play the Lions in Chicago this weekend, and once again, I expect the Bears to win this game.  Detroit was the only team in the division to win last week, and they beat up on the Packers, which is always a nice thing to see.  I think Detroit’s offense will have a lot more problems this week against the Bears.  They only scored 17 points on Green Bay, who are supposed to have one of the worst defenses in the league.  If the Bears can tighten up their run defense for the full game, it will be a long day for the Lions.

The best way for the defense to improve against the run is to keep the offense on the field more.  It seems like the Bears did pretty well against the run early in the game last week, but got worse as the game wore on.  If the Bears’ offense can produce longer, more time-consuming drives, this should not be as big of a problem.

It sounds like Orton wasn’t overly impressive in his debut, but he also didn’t totally fall apart either.  I only expect him to improve as he adjusts to the NFL.  He should have a better game this week, as he’ll be facing a defense that is not nearly as good as what he went up against with the Redskins.

Prediction time.  Bears 13 – Lions 6.  Bears don’t give up a touchdown in either of their first two games.

New blog

Bigshow, the most consistent poster of comments on this blog, now has a blog of his own.  It should be a good read if he maintains it.

Quick Thoughts 9/11

  • So I blew both of my predictions this weekend.  I wasn’t too far off on the Bears’ game though, and it looks like their defense is pretty tough.  I would expect the offense to get better as the season rolls on.
  • The Bears will finish ahead of the Packers in the division this year.  I really think these are two programs heading in opposite directions for the long term.
  • Our pastor’s son, Ben Utecht got to start for the Indianapolis Colts tonight.  As I write this, he just caught a TD pass from Peyton Manning.  I guess we can thank Urlacher for laying a lick on Dallas Clark in the pre-season and moving Ben up the depth chart.
  • Can you believe what some people dress their kids up in?

Sweeeet!

The Cyclones beat the Hawkeyes 23–3, and I’ve never been so happy to be wrong about a prediciton in my life.  Unfortunately, I was right about the bad kicking game, as the Clones left four points on the field, but as it turned out, they didn’t factor in to the outcome of the game.  Way to go ISU!

Quick Thoughts 9/9

  • The NFL season has officially begun!  I only watched a little bit of the game last night, but didn’t realize that Tim Dwight was playing for the Patriots now.  Somehow, even though I really don’t like him, I like to see him do well, probably because he’s one of the few Iowa natives in the NFL.  It was also nice to see former Cyclone, Ellis Hobbs III have a nice kick return for the Patriots as well.
  • I was reading an article on the Des Moines Register and found this quote a little bit troubling.  “The Cyclones are a nine-point underdog. "And rightly so," McCarney said.“  C’mon Mac, that might be reality, but that’s not a very motivational quote for your team.  You can speak praises about your opponents and be a classy guy, but that really is saying, “Yeah, we expect to lose.”
  • Don’t get me wrong, I hope the Cyclones win, but I am also being realistic.  Here’s my prediction for the game.  Iowa 31 – Iowa St. 17.  Please prove me wrong.  Wait, that 17 assumes that ISU make a FG, so let me change the pick to 31–14.  I’m just being realistic.
  • Let me throw out a prediction for Sunday’s Bears/Redskins game as well.  Bears 16 – Redskins 10.  The Bears’ lone TD will be scored by the defense.
  • In middle school, our choir director, Mr. Kap liked to say this classic movie line to me.  Ah that’s good stuff.

Quick Thoughts 9/6

  • Well I returned from a weekend back in Clinton and was happy to find my house dry and no surprises when I came home.
  • When I checked the headlines on my.yahoo today, I thought it was rather sad that among the top headlines of hurricane Katrina, Iraq, etc, was the announcement that Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow are getting married.  Sorry, but that belongs on the entertainment page, and that’s not news.
  • I’m a little concerned about the Iowa/Iowa State game this Saturday.  ISU was not very polished, but Iowa played a frosting-less cupcake, so does their 56–0 win really prove much?  A friend of mine who attended the ISU game was upset with the bland play calling ISU was using.  I just hope this was done so they didn’t expose all of their tricks prior to the Iowa game.  Here’s hoping for an exciting, close, and competitive game this weekend.
  • Does anyone outside the state of Florida really give a whoop about the Miami/Florida State game?  I sure don’t.

Superfan Kahn's thoughts 8/31

SF3_smallDr. Z, I really do like your columns, but I think you really missed the mark with your prediction for the Bears this season.  You say they are the 32nd ranked team in the NFL and will only win three games this year.  I still think the Bears can win nine games this season.  Really, the only thing that has changed since I first made that statement is that Grossman broke his ankle.  Now that seems like a big deal, but really, Grossman doesn’t have a whole lot more NFL experience that Orton has.  I’m saying that Grossman had a lot of high hopes laid on him, but he’s really not much more than a rookie himself.  What’s to say he wouldn’t have gone through growing pains, making bad reads, and making costly mistakes had he stayed healthy?  We will never know.  I definitely like the Bears’ chances a lot more with Orton at QB than with Chad Hutchinson, A.K.A. Mr. 0.0 QB rating.  Also, it was a new offense this year, and Grossman didn’t have that much of a head start on Orton in learning it.  I’m anxious to see what Orton looks like against the first teamers in the final preseason game.  I hope I don’t have to eat these words.

The defense is still the backbone of this team.  All they need is just a LITTLE help from the offense to sustain some drives and keep them off the field for a while.  It looks like the running game is also a strength of the team this year.  Again, all that needs is a LITTLE help from the passing game, so the opponent’s defense doesn't always stack everyone in the box like last season.  I still think Mushin Muhammad is going to have a much better season than anyone is predicting.  His value to the team just can’t be overlooked.  I don’t think the Bears are in nearly as bad of shape as Dr. Z thinks.

I have high hopes for Cedric Benson later this season.  I took him with a late-round fantasy pick last night.  He’ll be riding the bench for me for quite a while, but that’s okay because I also drafted Ladanian Tomlinson with my #1 pick, and also have two other RBs that should pan out nicely.  Benson was a value pick for me, based on potential.  Call it an investment.

Bear down!

Superfan Kahn's Thoughts 8/26

SF3_smallChad Hutchinson must go…NOW.  The Bears are not going to win games with him as the quarterback.  I really hope the Bears start Kyle Orton in the final pre-season game so we can see what he looks like with and against the first teams.  Really, he can’t be any worse, and is young, so will probably only get better.

Cedric Benson, what the hell are you thinking?  Quit listening to your idiot agent and sign the damn contract.  You are only hurting yourself right now.  If you ever get get a chance to play now, I hope you are the second coming of Walter Payton because you have a lot of work to do to win back over the Bears fans.  It is just ridiculous that an unproven rookie can demand so much money.  The Bears are completely justified in their stance of not offering any more money to Benson.  Their offer is reportedly right between the RB’s who were drafted on either side of Benson.  Somehow, Benson’s agent thinks he’s worth the same money the #4/traded for #1 pick/QB/Phillip Rivers got last season.  The Bears say they have made their best offer and will now start taking money off the table because Benson’s value is decreasing to the team.  Good for them.  Both Thomas Jones and Adrian Peterson are having very good pre-seasons.  Sorry Cedric, but you are not holding the cards in this one.  Just sign, take your guaranteed $17 million, and try to learn the offense so you can play once in a while this season.  This holdout just doesn’t make any sense.

I doubt I'd get this much fame

It seems like the drinking a gallon of milk in an hour challenge is everywhere now.  In case you missed it, former Marlins pitcher, Brad Penny, bet a Marlins’ batboy $500 that he couldn’t drink a gallon of milk in an hour.  The batboy didn’t throw up, but didn’t finish the whole gallon in the hour’s time.  The Marlins organization frowned on this contest and suspended the batboy for six games.  Now the batboy is getting offers from the milk council and other baseball teams.  You can read the full article here.

Bigshow is trying to get me to do this challenge with him next week.  I still think I can do this with a gallon of skim milk, but I just don’t want to do it as part of the event we’re having.  I drink a lot of milk.  Holly and I go through at least four gallons a week.  I’ve had a steak and potato dinner before and drank close to half a gallon of milk with it.  I don’t see drinking a full gallon as being that difficult, but we’ll find out.  Don’t worry Bigshow, I WILL do this challenge, just not next Wednesday.

How do you think my milk challenge will end?
Successfully drink a gallon in less than an hour and keep it down.
Keep it down, but not finish in an hour.
Blow chunks before the hour's up.
End up never doing it.

Funny Looking Produce

I don’t have any potatoes that look like famous people, but I did find a funny looking tomato in the garden today.  I won’t say anything else about it, but here are some pictures.  Hopefully you’ll be amused by it as I was.

Is that a turtle head?

Superfan Kahn's Thoughts 8/16

SF3_smallCedric Benson needs to sign ASAP.  I just don’t understand why players hold out for so long, especially unproven rookies.  I think he should be paid less for each day of camp he misses.  He needs to be present and learning the offense.  When he finally does sign, he’s going to so far behind, which translates into not playing as much right away during the regular season.  He’s really hurting himself, but maybe all he cares about is the money.  There are very few “team players” around these days.

Every time I read about Mushin Muhammad, I get the feeling that he’s bringing so much more to the Bears than just good hands.  It sounds like he is a true team player and stepping into a leadership role in the Bears’ locker room.  He comes to practices early, and stays late.  He mentors and coaches the other young receivers and ultimately will make them better players.  The national media thinks that he’ll have a down year statistically, and especially so now that Grossman is out, but I’m not sure that will be the case.  I won’t rush out and draft him in my fantasy leagues, but I don’t think he’s being given enough credit.  The Bears’ offense is far better with him on the team.  I think that will be shown on the field over the course of the year.  You really just need a QB that can accurately deliver the ball, and I think they guys the Bears have this year will be able to do that much better than the guys they had backing up at the start of last season.

Here’s a little tid-bit I read in an article about the ‘85 Bears.  They recorded the Superbowl Shuffle the day after being beaten by the Miami Dolphins.  That sure takes some guts to do something like that right after getting beat.  I found that very interesting.

Bear down!

Superfan Kahn's Thoughts 8/13

SF3The Bears are in a world of hurt right now with Grossman breaking his ankle last night.  He’s essentially out for the entire season.  The Bears’ upper management took a gamble on Grossman staying healthy for the entire season, and it looks like they just lost the farm.  Hutchinson and Orton appear to be a lot better than the backups of Quinn and Krentzel from last year, but it’s a disgrace that they couldn’t sign a quality backup in the off-season.  It pains me to say this, but it looks like Rex was another Bears QB bust.  We may never know how good he could have been because injuries have kept him from playing.  Even though this is very disappointing for Bears fans, here are three reasons why not to give up hope for this season.

  1. The injury happened very early in the pre-season, so the backups will get plenty of reps before the first game.
  2. Ron Turner’s offense is not nearly as complex or hard to understand as the offense the Bears tried to run last year.
  3. Defense.
