Yesterday we went to Holly’s parents’ house in Clear Lake, Iowa. On the way, we drove through Austin, Minnesota, home of the SPAM museum. I get a kick out of some of the billboards they have for it along I-90. Two of the best I’ve seen are “Yes, we answer the ingredients question,” which is currently up, and “Not all hogs make it to Sturgis,” which was up one summer. I had a free sample of SPAM at the county fair one year, but other than that, I’ve never had SPAM. Sometime we are going to stop at the SPAM museum. I’m curious to find out what is all there.
It amazes me how people complain about the high gas prices, but yet they drive their huge SUVs at 75+ mph. Everyone knows that SUVs get poor gas mileage, but those highway mileage stats are for 55 mph. The gas mileage is only going to get worse for every mile per hour faster they go. I don’t think people consciously think about this when they are driving, but it’s going to make a big difference as the gas prices keep going up. This was just something that crossed my mind as I was travelling on the interstate yesterday and getting passed by SUV after SUV.

My Trailblazer gets best milage at 59 MPH. Just thought you'd want to know.
And you've never had SPAM? Are you american? I'll have you and the family over for SPAM sometime. We usually have a couple of SPAM fries in Early Build at work (2 or so a year) so I'll drag you out at the next one. My brother and I used to steal the keys off of the bottom of the cans at the grocery store when we were kids. I now feel bad for the folks that took their SPAM home and were unable to eat the goods!
You've gotta try fried spam with mustard, it's actually pretty tasty. When I was in about the fifth grade, my parents took my sister and I camping at the Grand Canyon one spring. It was about 95 degrees in Vegas, but up at the North Rim, it turned out to be more like 40 degrees. Since we'd only brought sweatshirts as our warmest clothes, we were about half frozen before we got camp set up, but I swear to this day, that nothing tasted as good as the fried spam with mustard and the canned cream corn that we got from the camp stove...
I love SPAM so much, and have always wanted to check out that museum. Don't they have a "SPAM Days" or something once a year too? I'm not a fan of the new style cans with the pull-off tops though, the key was much more fun to use.
Yep, June 18 is SPAM museum Jam 2005. It looks like it might be fun. Celebrity TV "dads" Jim Belushi, Tom Bosley, and Kurtwood Smith will be there as well as some music acts.
