Quick Thoughts 12/5

  • NEWS-FLASH:  The Bears beat the Packers in Chicago!  I was a senior in high school the last time this happened, but what makes me feel old is how the Bears’ players say they were in grade school at the time.
  • I only saw the highlights from the Bears/Packers game, but it looked like Favre took quite a pounding.  Definitely not enough to keep him from starting next week though.
  • Former ISU Cyclone QB, Sage Rosenfels, led the Miami Dolphins to an impressive comeback win over the Bills.  Sage’s stats, an impressive 22 for 37 for 272 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT.  Not bad for a guy coming in off the bench.
  • Lesson learned:  Check the radar for the entire area of your roadtrip before you leave.  Before going to central Iowa on Saturday I checked the radar and saw that in Minnesota the snow had ended.  What I didn’t know about was the storm that was over central Iowa, and I went right into the worst of it.  It only snowed two to four inches there, but it was coming down pretty hard when I was driving, and the left lane of the interstate was pretty much undrivable.  In one thirty mile stretch there were about a dozen cars in the ditches.  Luckily I didn’t join them, and made it back home without incident, but I was mentally and physically exhausted from driving for eight hours (round trip) in the bad weather.
  • Today’s lyrics: “You’re tearing me apart.  Every, every day.  You’re tearing me apart.  Oh, what I can I say.  You’re tearing me apart.”

You sooooooo don't understand how much Chicagoans don't want to be reminded of Journey right now. The demons in my head have now been unleashed.

Hey, how 'bout those Bears? Another week, another team implements a bewildering game plan. I get 3 free lunches out of the deal.

I don't get it Dan, what's the deal with Journey and Chicagoans?

"Don't Stop Believing" was the unofficial theme song of the Sox this year -- I believe it was Piersinski who introduced it to the locker room. It was played heavily on all the local radio stations from the start of the playoffs through about a week ago, it seems. Since he had nothing else to do, Steve Perry himself was actually involved in a lot of the nonsense. He was at all the Series games, and it seemed like he made it into all the footage of their celebrations after they won (he sang at the pep rally). I mean, seriously, they're in the locker room, dousing each other in champagne -- Rowan! Crede! Konerko! Steve Perry! It was just a bit odd...

I had a feeling none of this really leaked out into the nat'l media.

They let Steve Perry travel on the plane with them.
I was surprised they didn't let him be batboy for Game 5.

I heard Houston brought Steven Walsh of Kansas to sing Dust In The Wind for their game 5 pep rally. Not a good move.

There's a new rumor that the Sox are looking at trading Perry for Andrew Ridgely, citing his ability to play an instrument as an "upgrade." While a former band-geek as myself can appreciate his ability to really nail that key-change in "Freedom," I think they may want to do a little more scouting work. Ridgely's instrumental work, while solid, was never really relied upon to carry a team. (Indeed, everyone knows the chief components of Wham!'s success were Michael's singing and those thought-provoking, insightful lyrics -- "Guilty feet have got no rhythm" being a prime example.)

Regardless of who might be acquired in trade, I don't really think you can give up Perry's mad front-man skillz, which you're really not going to surpass unless Freddie Mercury comes back from the dead, or something.

Ugh. Now I've done it to myself. Here's what's in my head right now:

[Fake Trumpets]: Dooooo Dooooo Doot!
[George Michael]: Doot Doot Doooo!
[Fake Trumpets]: Dooooo Dooooo Doot!
[George Michael]: Whoa-oa yeah!
[Fake Trumpets]: Dooooo Dooooo Doot!
[George Michael]: Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doooo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo-oa!

I know that when I work my way through it to that end part where he gets really high that I'll just transition into Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go where he does the same thing. Aw, crap. It's already happened...
