Quick Thoughts 9/20

  • I was flipping through the channels and came across a pretty funny music video tonight.  I couldn’t figure out who it was, since I didn’t catch it from the beginning.  It looked like a home video of an 80’s hair band called Sphynkter.  I was totally shocked to find out that it was the Backstreet Boys and their song “Just Want You to Know.”  The video was hilarious, but both Holly and I both agreed that the song wasn’t very good.
  • I had only watched one previous episode of Rock Star INXS before tonight, but decided to watch the finale.  Who has a name like J.D. Fortune anyway?  I highly doubt that is his given name.  Anyway, I think he sounds an awful lot like Michael Hutchence, so that will help.  I thought Marty had too much of a David Bowie look going on, and I find that disturbing.
  • I caught the last half of a program on the Science Channel about parallel universes.  Apparently there is this M-theory that they think can explain the singularity at the beginning of the big bang and follow time back before that even.  It has something to do with the eleventh dimension.  This was pretty deep stuff and it might have made more sense had I seen the entire program.  That kind of stuff just fascinates me.
  • Thanks to everyone for posting comments yesterday.  I’m more inclined to write when I get feedback.  My dad reads my blog about every day, but I can’t get him to post comments.  I don’t know what else to do, since talking about TV couldn’t even get him to post.  He usually has two to three VCRs going taping all the shows he likes that are on at the same time.  So he knows his TV.  Maybe calling him out will get him to post.

What the..... nice video. Glad it's low budget. I haven't seen this one on MTV yet... oh wait, MTV doesn't show videos anymore!

Have you ever watched Arrested Development, Kahn? I don't get much chance to watch a lot of shows that are on before 9, but that show is great. Its one problem is that you REALLY have to pay attention from start to finish to get most of it.

JD, retarded last name withstanding, was the obvious choice. INXS could do Pretty Vegas. There's no way they could do Trees. (And there isn't anybody that SHOULD -- please let's kill that now.)

I remember having a discussion with some physics people about some of that 11th dimension stuff. Something about the number of dimensions that unfolded in the big bang had to be in some particular set (like 11, 17, or 21) because otherwise the universe wouldn't be possible. Of course, after watching the movie Contact I realized that scientists are just as likely to get as wedded to concepts that reaffirm their worldview as religious fundamentalists and 24-hour news anchors. So, whatever.

No Dan, I have not watched Arrested Development before. Usually if it's not one of the 5-6 network programs I regularly watch, I tend to find something on in the Discovery/TLC/National Geographic/History/Science Channel area.

I understand where you are coming from with not watching much TV before 9PM though. I rarely watch the Simpsons anymore either, even though I still love that show. When it comes out on DVD in ten years I figure I'll watch the episodes I'm missing now.

I was very pleased with the "Rock Star" outcome. I agree that JD can sound a lot like Michael, so I think things should work ok. It's not like they're ever going to get back to their previous level of fame though.

Kahn, you picked a bad night to watch Rock Star.
The songs weren't the greatest and it was more reality show than stage performances.
Marty grows on you, but I could see how some would be scared by his David Bowie persona.

I thought all the eliminations were very predictable all season.
I had each elimination pegged. And I think JD wanted it much more than Marty or Mig.
Marty wants to scream with the Love Hammers and Mig wants to dance on broadway.

I was disappointed that Mig did Bohemian Rhapsody. Bad move. He was trying so hard to get beyond his musical theater background, but came full circle. But I guess he ended doing what he loved most... covering Queen. hehe

I already heard that Pretty Vegas will be on IINXS new album. It's a decent song.
What I found so corny last night was they kept referring to INXS as a SUPER GROUP.
What?!? They had some hits, I'll give them that. But I don't remember any of their albums except Kick.
If they are considered a super group, than what would U2 be considered? A super duper wonder-group!

And yes, I have read Ryan's blog. It's entertaining. Some comments and picture captions have made me laugh-out-loud. I still get a little weirded when reading about splitting of manicured toe nails, however. But if I want true harsh and funny comments about reality shows... especially those involving Paula Abdul, I know where to go.

I read today that Fortune is actually his mother's maiden name. Jason Dean decided to use that, instead of his last name (Bennison), because there was already a Jason Bennison in the biz.
